The sideline was packed at Quincy’s soccer field last Saturday, when the Quincy and Portola boys’ and girls’ soccer teams met for back-to-back matches amid homecoming celebrations.

All the spectators from Quincy and Portola were treated to two very good matches.

Quincy won the girls’ match 1-0, and Portola won the boys’ match 3-2.

In the girls’ match, Quincy scored early on a penalty kick shot in by Cecillia Tovar, and then the rest of the game went scoreless.
“I was really impressed with our defense,” said Portola coach Dave Valle. “It was solid. We started with a lot of inexperienced girls, but they’ve really picked it up.”

Quincy coach Lynn Koeller commented that her team was missing a couple players.

Following the girls’ match, the boys took the field and played 80 minutes of intense soccer.

Quincy scored first with a goal by Alex Lemnah, and then Portola tied the match with a penalty kick by Pedro Benuto.
Benuto then scored again to give Portola a 2-1 lead, but Quincy tied it with another goal by Lemnah.

Lemnah’s second goal was off a free kick from midfield, which he aimed perfectly into the top right corner of the goal, out of reach of the keeper.

The score at halftime was 2-2. Portola put in the game-winning goal in the second half when Mario Juarez connected with a header off a well-placed corner kick from Benuto.

Les Carr and Jose Avalos also delivered assists for Portola. Garrett Hagwood earned an assist for Quincy.

Chester and Quincy girls
On a hot day with temperatures in the mid 90s, the Chester and Quincy girls’ soccer teams played to a 1-1 draw in Quincy Wednesday, Sept. 29.

Chester struck first early in the second half, when Miranda Lemons scored off a keeper deflection after a shot by McKenna Taylor.
Quincy leveled the score midway through the second half off a PK by Kristen Koeller.
