North arm resident Marty Shower, 53, died in a horrific head-on collision with a big rig Monday afternoon, April 19, on Highway 99, south of Yuba City, according to an article posted 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, at appealdemocrat.com.
While she died instantly according to the report, her husband, John, was in the back seat and is being treated for several broken bones at Rideout Hospital in Marysville, according to close family friends Tom and Maggie Rahn of Greenville.
John Shower’s brother-in-law John Ritchie received serious injuries, is in critical condition with a collapsed lung, and had surgery to remove his ruptured spleen at Sutter-Roseville Hospital.
The Showers were to fly to Hawaii to visit their son Michael.
“We are all just so devastated,” Maggie Rahn said.
The Showers were both very active volunteers in the Indian Valley and Plumas County communities, most recently at the Shanghai Shindig, a fundraiser for the Indian Valley Community Center in Greenville.
The Appeal Democrat article gives graphic details from a nearby resident, as well as information from California Highway Patrol officer Jeff Larson, who told the newspaper that the big rig driver said he was cut off by a heating and air conditioning van and lost control.
More information will be posted on plumasnews.com when it becomes available, and in the next issue of the Indian Valley Record.
