The Chester High School boys basketball team is now in the drivers seat in the Feather River League, after defeating Portola 58-48 last Friday night, Jan. 29.
The victory moved Chester to 3-0 in league. Portola and Loyalton each sit with 2-1 league records.
Chester led Portola the entire game. After jumping out to a 10-0 advantage, the Volcanoes led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter and 29-15 at halftime.
It kind of surprised me, said Chester coach Dale Keefer. I expected a lot more resistance.
Portola outscored Chester 15-13 in the third quarter and 18-16 in the final period, but the Volcanoes maintained a 10-point lead to the end.

Chesters defense was also impressive, as the Volcanoes outrebounded the Tigers and limited Portolas top scorers to single digits.
We handled them on the boards pretty well, keeping Rodriguez at bay, said Keefer. We also kept Robinson at bay.
Chad Durkin was Chesters other player to earn a double-double, with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Topher Taylor delivered 14 assists for the Volcanoes. Keith Wann and Cole Fanning registered six points apiece, Taylor claimed five and Seth Cory netted four.
Portolas scoring was led by Erick Miller, who hit three 3-pointers to finish with 11 points. Robinson and Rodriguez earned nine points apiece, while Kyle Heskett and Dylan Soares each scored seven.
In the girls game before the boys match, the Portola Tigers defeated Chester 48-38 by outscoring the Volcanoes 16-7 in the fourth quarter.
Emma Briggs led the Lady Tigers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Ellie Kibble added 10 points, while Lindsey Compton led with four steals and six assists.
