The Chester boys’ basketball team proved to be the host with the most last weekend as it held and won the annual Mountain Pride Tournament at Chester High School. The Volcanoes took on and defeated three teams in games three days in a row.

The tournament started Dec. 12 and Chester nearly doubled East Nicolaus’ score to win 63-33. The next day the Volcanoes toppled Big Valley with a 79-69 win. On the final day of the tournament, Chester beat Burney 73-63.

Chester got an early lead in the game against East Nicolaus and continued to tally the points. Wyatt Durkin, Hunter Morris and David Estacio all scored in the double digits with 13 points apiece. Estacio led the team in long shots with three three-pointers.

Chester had a tougher time pulling out a win against Big Valley. The Volcanoes dominated the first half to gain a nine-point lead. Big Valley came back in the third quarter to outscore Chester 31-29 and take the lead 58-55.

Chester came back in the final quarter to make shot after shot and win the game. Durkin led in scoring and defense with 33 points 20 rebounds. Morris helped control the game to add 20 points.

Chester’s win against Burney wasn’t easily obtained either. The Volcanoes kept a lead throughout the game, but Burney was hot on their trail. Durkin led in points again with 26. Estacio was close behind with 21 points and Morris had 10.

Chester will travel to Susanville this weekend for Lassen’s annual tournament. The Volcanoes will then take a break for the holidays and return to the court in the beginning of January 2014.
