At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Thur. Nov. 21 a Penske rental van crashed through the guardrail just west of Belden, traveled down the bank and landed sideways in the Feather River. A work crew from the Yellow Creek Power House and passing motorists cobbled together a collection of ropes and cargo straps to scale the bank, wade the river and pull the driver from the truck. Emergency personnel were working to rescue a man after the rental truck he was driving plunged into the Feather River near Belden Thursday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver was out of the vehicle, but still in the water just after 5:30 p.m.

The accident was reported at 4:21 p.m.

According to reports, several vehicles stopped at the scene of the accident to assist in the rescue.

A swift-water rescue was being conducted by search and rescue responders.

Although the man was out of the vehicle, he was reportedly too hypothermic to make it to the shore.

The vehicle reportedly came to rest on its side in about six feet of water and about 20 feet from shore.

The cause of the accident is unknown.

In addition to the accident, a driver at the scene reported a large rock “about the size of a refrigerator” was in the roadway about five miles west of the accident scene.
