Greenville resident hits vehicle, fences, tree - Charged with DUI, hit-and-run
A Greenville man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a driving rampage last week.
On Oct. 30, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Robert Hereford, 33, was driving his 2004 Dodge 1500 pickup truck eastbound on Main Street toward Bush Street in Greenville.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Hereford attempted to make a right turn onto Bush Street but turned too soon and struck a Pacific Gas & Electric power pole. After striking the pole, Hereford backed up and fled the scene southbound on Bush Street at a reported high rate of speed.
Hereford’s vehicle crossed into the northbound lane on Bush Street where it struck a Mazda pickup parked on the east shoulder.
Hereford backed away from the Mazda and fled the scene westbound on Jessie Street.
Unable to make the turn, the Dodge crossed into the eastbound lane of Jessie Street and went up onto the sidewalk and struck a guide wire for a PG&E pole and knocked over a chain link fence in the front yard of a private residence. The left front tire broke off at the axle.
Despite the major damage to his pickup, Hereford backed away from the fence and fled westbound on Jessie Street. While attempting to make a left turn onto southbound Highway 89, the truck struck a light post located at the southeast corner of the intersection. Hereford backed away from the light post and fled the scene southbound on Highway 89.
Because of the severe damage to the truck, he was unable to control it, and made several wide circles in the middle of the highway before heading southbound in the northbound lane.
The pickup left the east shoulder and drove into the parking lot of Mountain Circle Family Services, where it struck an enclosed trailer. After bounding off the trailer, Hereford continued driving southbound in the northbound lane.
Just north of Standard Mine Road, the truck left the east roadway edge, where it struck a large cedar tree before rolling onto its left side down a short embankment.
Hereford exited the pickup and attempted to flee the scene. A passerby stopped and provided assistance to Hereford until paramedics arrive.
Hereford was airlifted to Enloe Hospital in Chico, with moderate injuries including a concussion and complaint of pain to his lower back.
He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and five counts of hit and run.
