Cheerleaders around Plumas County are already in high spirits for the upcoming high school sporting seasons. Between camps, practices and fundraisers, Plumas cheerleaders are keeping busy.

The Quincy High School cheer squad, for instance, gathered up materials and headed to the fairgrounds July 17 to make all the signs for the season. Giant signs for the team to run through at the start of each game were made for every home game scheduled for 2013.

The four county schools’ squads have already held multiple fundraisers this summer, including the ever-popular car washes. Much of the money raised will help the squads pay for their cheer camps.

Quincy’s squad will attend a cheer and dance stunt camp at McQueen High School in Reno July 29 – 31. Quincy has the smallest squad of the 20 schools that plan to attend with only 12 girls. Some of the schools have up to 45 on their squads.

Chester was the first school in Plumas County to hold a camp. A mini-camp for the Volcanoes’ No. 1 fans took place in Chester July 1 – 3.

Portola’s squad will attend Home Cheer Camouflage in Portola Aug. 3 – 5. Instructors from the Universal Cheerleaders Association will travel to Eastern Plumas to show Portola’s squad a trick or two.

Greenville plans to have a camp for its squad, but it probably won’t be until late August. According to Greenville’s cheer coach, Judy Dolphin, most cheerleaders on the squad are busy with summer jobs and won’t have the opportunity to focus on cheer until the end of summer.
