Nostalgia for days past and underlying excitement for what the future might bring marked the emotional graduation of the Chester High School Class of 2013.

The obvious bond the 34 graduates have formed over the years was evidenced with the fact that 20 of them had traveled down the same memory lane from kindergarten through grade 12. “The rest we have adopted,” a graduate said.

During his speech, graduate Micah Bondon summed up the sentiment best by saying, “I wish there was a way to know you are in the good old days before you left them.”

Valedictorian Ian Mahaffey and salutatorian Kelsey Wilkinson gave motivational speeches.

Reinforcing his positive theme, he told his peers and graduation guests, “As long as we believe in ourselves we can accomplish anything.”

In her closing, Wilkinson spoke for herself and her peers when she said, “We have finished our exams and cleared our lockers but we will never leave behind the memories of 2013.”

Prior to announcing the graduating Class of 2013, Principal Scott Cory took a moment to express his feelings about this being the last Chester graduation in which he will participate.

“I would not trade the past 14 years for anything. It’s not just about the graduates, it’s about community too.

“My kids have been your kids, your kids have been mine. Thank you for that,” Cory said.

The graduating class of 2013 was presented by Principal Cory and accepted by Terry Oestreich, Plumas Unified School District director of career technical education/alternative education.

Assistant principal and athletic director Terry Hernandez assisted PUSD trustee Sonja Anderson and Principal Cory in the awarding of diplomas.

Conducted by Jane Brown, the CHS band and senior band performed “Pomp and Circumstance,” “Light Cavalry Overture” by Franz von Suppe, “Afterburn” by Randall Standridge and the “CHS Alma Mater,” with lyrics by Tracy Muller Anderson.

Cory’s last day with Chester High School and the Plumas Unified School District is June 30. He has accepted a job as superintendent with the Santa Ynez Valley Union High School District, his hometown and alma mater.
