Portola Railroad Days organizers announce new event

Feather Publishing

The Friends of Portola Railroad Days Citizen Interest Group is teaming with the Eastern Plumas Chamber of Commerce its first 2013 fundraiser: “Shiver at the River,” featuring a yo-yo challenge, Taste of Portola and a Rock Bottom Band concert on Saturday, April 20, at the Portola Veterans’ Memorial Hall.

Taste of Portola will run from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will feature appetizers from the Alpine Grill, Lena’s Cantina, the Pizza Factory, Rico’s Mexican Food and Sharon’s Café. Wine samples from Indian Peak Vineyards will be available, as will beer from The Brewing Lair of the Lost Sierra.

And, of course, participants should brush up on their yo-yo skills for the yo-yo challenge sponsored by the Sierra Motel and the Grateful Dawg General Store. Organizers envision the Portola City Council challenging Loyalton, the Plumas County Board of Supervisors challenging Sierra County, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Department challenging local California Highway Patrol or firefighters.

Challenge rules are under construction and will be posted at portolarailroaddays.com.

Organizers are also looking for merchants to sponsor “Save the Earth Coloring Contest” winners’ attendance at Shiver at the River. April 20 falls in the middle of Earth Week so organizers partnered with C. Roy Carmichael Elementary School for their “Save the Earth Coloring Contest” to raise children’s awareness of recycling and conservation. The event will also include static displays to educate the community on conservation in general.

Participants shouldn’t be surprised if a fisherman or two drops by to weigh in their derby entries. Everyone is welcome to take advantage of a bonfire out back — BYOC (bring your own chair) — and share some good times with family, friends and neighbors.

To top it off, the Rock Bottom Band plays inside the Memorial Hall from 8 to 10 p.m. Tickets are available at the Eastern Plumas Chamber of Commerce (Blairsden), Sharon’s Café (Portola) and the Grateful Dawg General Store (Portola). Adult tickets are $20, child tickets (12 years and under) are $10, senior tickets (65 and over) are $15 and family tickets (two adults and two children 12 years and under) are $50.
