las vegas buying spree

While attending the World Market Show in Las Vegas, Norm and Jeanne Brovelli, owners of La Casa Bella Fine Furnishings, tell us they bought lots of new merchandise for their uniquely trendy furniture and home decorating store in Quincy. Look for these new items — lamps, vases, wall decor, decorative baskets and other home furnishing accessories — to be arriving soon. Jeanne said she is really excited to add the quality line of Momeni Persian carpets to her store, which can inspire ideas for making your home come alive with true timeless beauty. La Casa Bella is on Main Street across from the post office complex.

setting it straight

Last week in this column we reported the opening of Portola’s newest restaurant; unfortunately we inadvertently changed its name. Claire and Joel Allen have opened the Alpine Grill, not the Aspen Grill as we renamed it, so our apologies. But we should also pass along all the great reports we’ve heard that the food — both breakfast and lunch — is terrific!

polka dot opens for season

For locals, it’s always an indication spring and summer are just around the corner when news breaks that the Polka Dot in East Quincy opens for the season. This is the popular fast food drive-in restaurant’s 51st year in business and Rae and Mel Lancaster’s second year as owners.


scheduled winter closure

Cathy and Tim Kurdupski are heading to warmer climates for their annual getaway, so the Graeagle Mill Works will close at the end of business Saturday, Feb. 23, and will reopen Monday, April 1.

final call for visitors guide ads

We have until Friday to put the finishing touches on the 2013 Plumas County Visitors Guide. This comprehensive and attractive full-color magazine is distributed through the region and is used extensively by both tourists and locals alike. If you have not placed your ad, there are just a few days left. Just call your local newspaper advertising rep before Friday, Feb. 22, and we’ll help you create an effective ad tailored to your needs and budget.

Note to yellow page advertisers

Thanks to those who bought advertising space in this year’s edition of the Plumas Lassen Connection telephone directory. We appreciate your confidence and trust in us and in the effectiveness of our locally produced phonebook.

We know there are lots of other choices when it comes to spending your advertising dollars, so we wanted to take this opportunity to give you a brief heads-up: There are sales reps from other telephone directory companies currently working this area selling yellow page ads for their books, which publish early this summer.

If you decide to buy an ad from one of these well-trained salespeople, be sure you know in what directory you’re buying and its coverage and readership. No harm in asking lots and lots of questions while considering all your options.

And, if you happen to have an ad in one of those other books that you no longer want, you have to specifically cancel the order. At least with one of the directory companies, the agreement you signed with them when the ad was originally ordered automatically renews for the next year if it is not canceled with their sales rep by phone or in writing — even if they haven’t contacted you for the new book! Any “non-action” on your part can be (and has been) considered as a renewal under the terms of their contract.
