The Quincy High School ski team traveled to Sugar Bowl on Jan. 14 to switch up the runs and compete in some races.
The ski team’s league consists of six competing schools. Quincy is joined by Davis, Del Ono, Nevada Union, Colfax and Placer.
The four members of Quincy’s team didn’t perform as well as they hoped, but they still performed admirably. Daniel Haygood placed the highest on the team at 13th.
Che Rubalcava-Cunan came in right behind Haygood to place 14th. Dayne Lewis placed 29th and Brian Wood came in 37th.
The conditions at Sugar Bowl proved a bit more difficult to deal with than the conditions at Northstar the week before. The wind chill during the race brought the temperature to minus 20 F.
The cold weather caused the timing equipment to act up, thus delaying the start time by 90 minutes. Quincy’s racers bided their time in the freezing weather while the equipment was fixed.
“It was a pretty cold and exhausting day,” said the team’s coach, Katy Dyrr. “We’re going to keep training hard and try to get back in the top 10.”
The Quincy ski team is currently ranked fifth in its league with two sets of races completed. The team has four more races left to complete its regular season.
