The snow berms have brought many challenges for the people of Plumas County, but one family in Portola sees them as an opportunity to build the ultimate snowman. On Dec. 26 Kenny Schlegel, of Sloat (left), Makaylah Villarreal, of Portola, and James Lopthien, of Stead (right), built an 11-foot snowman out of the extra snow plowed up by their house on the corner of Pacific and Fourth. The giant Frosty was complete with a scarf made out of Christmas lights and a lit-up torch for a right arm.

The snowman took more than 6-1/2 hours to build, but may have taken less time if the builders didn’t have to stop and help push the many cars that got stuck while stopping to take a look. Schlegel will be deploying later this year, and he said it was a great way to spend his last Christmas with his niece and nephew before leaving. Photo by Carolyn Carter
