Portola High School VP named as new principal
Portola High School’s new principal is already a familiar face around campus — she’s vice principal Sara Sheridan.
It’s been only eight years since the 34-year-old Sheridan landed her first teaching assignment at Portola High School. She taught 10th-grade social studies and physical education.

Highway through Lassen Volcanic National Park now open

Park Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz announced last week that the highway through Lassen Volcanic National Park would open for through traffic as of Friday, June 1.
“We are happy to have this major access to Lassen Volcanic National Park opened now that summer has arrived,” said Koontz. “This year’s road opening operations progressed more quickly compared to last year’s mid-July opening primarily because of the light snowfall this past winter.”

Three people injured in dog attack
Three people were hospitalized, two with serious injuries, after being attacked by a dog Friday afternoon in Chester.
The victims’ identities were not available at press time. One of the victims was the owner of the dog, according to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy responded to a call for “a dog bite” about 4 p.m. Sgt. Ian James arrived at the scene and found three people with injuries.

Rare plant ‘treasure hunt’ offered by California Native Plant Society
The California Native Plant Society is hosting a Rare Plant Treasure Hunt weekend June 9 and 10 at several botanical hotspots in the Plumas National Forest near Quincy. Beginning and experienced botanists are welcome and will spend time searching for rare plants, geo-caching and photographing/documenting discoveries.
