These are a few of the stories you will find in this week's printed newspaper:

  • Luck dog: After eight harrowing days lost in the Plumas National Forest, a missing Shetland sheepdog was found. He was hungry, tired, cold, scratched, limping on bloody paws and missing some fir. But his tail was wagging.
  • On trial: The trial for a Quincy man accused of inflicting fatal injuries on a toddler in 2013 is scheduled to begin March 12.
  • Moving on: Just days after Plumas District Hospital announced that it couldn’t take over Quincy Nursing & Rehabilitation, several residents of the facility have found new homes.

Indian Valley School Closure and Consolidation Committee members were visibly drooping by the time they were ready to vote their approval Thursday, April 5, on their recommendations to the Plumas Unified School District board of directors.

The time was after 9 p.m., and member Lisa Smith had long since passed around homemade brownies to all in attendance.

Spring snow didn’t deter more than 70 business owners from attending the Plumas Business Summit held March 26 at Nakoma Golf Resort.

And those who braved the weather weren’t disappointed. Audrey Ellis, executive director of the Eastern Plumas Chamber of Commerce, one of the event’s co-sponsors, said attendees gave the event high marks in their exit surveys.

“We were very pleased; we got very good feedback,” Ellis said. On a scale of one to five, with five being the highest, those responding gave perfect marks to the location and the food, as well as some of the speakers and a presentation by Feather River College students on marketing.

Proposal maintains Measure B cap on property taxes

Chief Executive Officer Doug Lafferty presented his proposal for a hospital upgrade to the Plumas District Hospital board April 5. The price tag on Lafferty’s proposal comes in at less than half of the ill-fated Measure A proposal: $9 – $10 million, with completion by fall 2013.

The previous hospital administration’s plan projected costs of $21.7 million and completion in December 2011. Officials at the time steadfastly maintained the project was bare bones.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to reduce benefits for themselves and other salaried county leaders last week.

Two weeks after county officers blasted the supervisors and budget officer Jack Ingstad for the pay cut process, the mood during the meeting Tuesday, April 3, was somewhat subdued.

Chairman Robert Meacher, who is leaving the board in December after 20 years on the job, broke a long silence after the vote.
