Sierra County museums open for the summer

When the Kentucky Mine stamp mill was up and running at its maximum, you could hear the 10 1,000-pound stamps crushing gold-veined quartz ore for miles around. In fact, the din of the several stamp mills operating near Sierra City during the gold rush days of the 1800s was so uproarious that people had to get inside somewhere in order to carry on a conversation!

City of Portola committee looks into rate study

The ad hoc committee formed to review proposed city water and sewer rate hikes gave its first report at the May 25 regular meeting of the Portola City Council. In response to significant public outcry during the Proposition 218 process, Mayor Pro Tem Juliana Mark and council member William Weaver were appointed to the committee to look into other options.

If you’ve never donated blood at one of Quincy’s four community drives each year, June might be the one to start!

United Blood Services is putting the “drive” in “blood drive” by offering an added incentive to donors, a chance to win a new 2010 Toyota Corolla. All presenting donors who participate in any UBS blood drive between June 1st and September 10th will have their name entered in a drawing to win this car, donated by Northern Nevada Toyotadealers in Reno, Fallon, and Carson City.

Lucky twice over: Loyalton grad shares experiences with Marines in Afghanistan

According to his mother, Lorre Wallace of Quincy, United States Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Brenton Beever, a 2004 graduate of Loyalton High School, shares a unique experience with his late grandfather, Graeagle resident Francis Beever — he survived a near miss. Twice.

Beever recently returned stateside to Camp Pendleton after a seven-month deployment to the Sangin Valley of Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan.

The life and times of the late Doc Batson: family donates collection

The Dr. Wilbur Batson story will be told this year at the Greenville Cy Hall Memorial Museum, where an album with a list of more than 1,000 local babies he delivered will be on display, as well as photos of many of the nurses who worked with him.

The museum will open Saturday, May 28, 1 – 4 p.m. For the rest of the summer season, the hours will be Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1 – 4 p.m. More days and hours will be added if additional docents become available.
