Fire claims one life, sends six others to burn centers

An early morning blaze just days before Christmas has left a Portola family of eight with one dead, six injured and their home destroyed.

Fire broke out in the mobile home at 417 W. Plumas Ave. Wednesday, Dec. 21, around 12:15 a.m., quickly engulfing the home and spreading to mobile homes on either side.

Boy’s helping hands rewarded

Plumas County sheriff’s deputies pulled Greenville Elementary student Kyle Hitson out of a lineup of his classmates last week.

Deputy Phil Shannon and his wife, Che Shannon, also a sheriff’s office employee, stood on either side of Hitson and turned him to face the assembled students.

County scraps recycling pilot project

The county has decided to scrap a mandatory curbside recycling and waste removal program … at least for now.

Instead, the Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday, Dec. 13, to apply excess profit from Feather River Disposal toward improving FRD’s transfer stations.

Seven injured, one dead in house fire

The fire that injured seven people and killed another in Portola yesterday reignited today around noon. The Portola Fire Department and one Delleker tanker were on the scene, along with the Plumas County Sheriff's Office.

In other developments, officials say they have recovered remains they
believe to be 73-year-old Donna Richardson. Her identity will have to
be confirmed by dental records or DNA analysis.

A CalFire investigator said today that the cause of the blaze is
still under investigation. He said he could not even confirm that the
fire started in the laundry room, as earlier reported.

 

HouseFire3One Portola resident is missing and seven are injured following a house fire this morning.

According to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office, the blaze began in the laundry room of a doublewide mobile home at 417 West Plumas Ave. It quickly engulfed the entire structure.

Seven occupants — Todd Barclay, 41, and Carla Barclay, 42, and their five children, ranging in age from 7 to 17 —escaped the fire.

An eighth resident, Donna Richardson, 73, has not been accounted for.

School closure process begins; Board adopts timeline, appoints committee members

The Plumas Unified School District governing board formally launched the school closure process at its meeting Tuesday, Dec. 13. The board created three school consolidation committees and appointed members. The board also adopted a timeline for facility review, considered best practices for school consolidation and heard recommendations from an advisory committee.
