Premium check delay worked out

It was all about fair entries for the bulk of the Plumas-Sierra County Fair board meeting Wednesday, Sept. 28. Plumas County Auditor Shawn Montgomery was on the agenda to address W9s, among other things.

In addition, Norma Wood spoke on behalf of ALIVE participants during public comment. ALIVE is a program of Plumas Rural Services for adults with developmental disabilities and special needs.

Lassen Park fire is being managed for resource benefits

A series of thunderstorms passing through Lassen Volcanic National Park and the neighboring region produced a number of lightning strikes that ignited five small fires in the park.

Two of the fires were suppressed and one other fire went out on its own. Park staff decided to manage the remaining two fires: the Peak Fire and the Summit Fire. The Peak Fire is located at 8,330 feet in elevation on the northwest slope of Lassen Peak. Surrounded by rock and snow, it has little potential for growth.

Water rights holders continue weighing options

Indian Creek water rights holders bombarded state water officials with questions when they came to Taylorsville Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Many knew it was too late to prevent hundreds and thousands of dollars in charges on their tax bills come December, so the verification of that by the state and the county came as no surprise.

Lassen man dies in Highway 36 crash

A 22-year-old Milford man was found dead Tuesday morning, Sept. 27, after a single-vehicle accident on Highway 36 near Chester.

Jeffrey D. Washabaugh died from blunt-force injuries after his 2006 Toyota Tacoma apparently veered off the road and crashed into a pine tree near the bottom of the Johnson Grade.

Hearing date set for man accused in car-chase shooting death

The man charged with shooting a Susanville resident to death during a car chase won’t have a preliminary hearing until early next year.

Gregory Chad Wallin-Reed agreed to wait until Jan. 19, 2012, for the hearing to allow his defense attorneys more time to review evidence.

Wallin-Reed, 36, of Reno, who has pleaded “not guilty” in the shooting death of 20-year-old Rory McGuire, appeared in Plumas County Superior Court on Friday, Sept. 23.
